Tying your shoes, driving to work, typing on a keyboard or caring for a pet—these are common, routine activities of daily living. And they can be hard to accomplish when you're dealing with an injury, illness or disability, either mental or physical.
The occupational therapy team at Berger Health System can help. We specialize in developing individualized plans that can help you keep moving forward, despite your condition.
Who benefits from occupational therapy?
Anyone struggling with activities of daily living due to physical, mental or developmental illnesses, injuries or aging can benefit from working with our occupational therapy team. We help people who have sports or overuse injuries, such as:
- Carpal/cubital tunnel.
- Fractures of the elbow, forearm, wrist, hand or fingers.
- Tendon/ligament strain or tear.
- Tennis elbow.
- Shoulder therapy.
We also help people recover from or deal with health issues such as:
- Muscle weakness.
- Brain injury.
We also work with people who have developmental delays or congenital issues that impact their movement and limit their independence.
Occupational therapy services
Since our clients come to us with so many different types of issues, the occupational therapy activities we provide are similarly diverse. We perform an evaluation to determine what type of help you might need, and then we develop a treatment program based on your goals.
Your program might help you learn how to protect your joints, wear a splint or use adaptive equipment. We might help you adjust your posture and body mechanics so you'll put less pressure on your joints and muscles.
We might work with you to help you prepare to return to work, or we might focus on skills you'll use in your home. You will help us guide the program we develop.
Where we offer occupational therapy
We offer inpatient occupational therapy services that begin while you're recovering in Berger Hospital. You will have treatment sessions with the team in the hospital, and you'll be provided with clear discharge instructions when it's time to go home.
We also offer outpatient occupational therapy services for people who need help but who aren't in the hospital right now. This care is delivered in a series of appointments depending on your needs. How often you come to the clinic for care will depend on your health and your goals.
