Anesthesia is absolutely vital when you're having surgery. A skilled anesthesiology team can help you to stay calm before surgery and safe during the procedure. At Berger Health System, we have a team you can count on.
Our anesthesiology team uses best practices in each and every surgery that happens at Berger Hospital. And we have plenty of anesthesia options to help you, no matter what kind of surgery you might need.
Anesthesia options we offer
The type of anesthesia you will need is dependent on the type of surgery you will have and the requirements of the surgeon who will perform your procedure. We offer a number of different forms of anesthesia, including:
- General anesthesia: a combination of medicines that you inhale through a mask or receive through a needle in a vein that affects your whole body and renders you unconscious. Under general anesthesia, you will be completely unaware and unable to feel pain.
- Regional anesthesia: local anesthetics used to block sensations of pain from a large area of the body, such as an arm or leg or the abdomen. You won't be unconscious if your surgeon chooses this form of anesthesia.
- Local anesthesia: medications block sensations of pain from a specific area of the body. Local anesthetics are usually given by injection into the body area that needs to be anesthetized. Local anesthetics may be given with other medicines that make you relaxed or sleepy (sedatives). These other medicines are often given by IV.
Preparing for anesthesia
Your doctor will help you understand how to prepare for surgery so that you know what to eat or drink before you come to Berger Hospital for care. We will help you understand how your anesthesia will work and what you might expect both before and after our work is done.
For example, if your surgeon has requested general anesthesia, you may experience some confusion, disorientation, or difficulty thinking clearly when you awaken from surgery. This is normal, but it can be a little frightening, if you don't know what to expect. We'll explain everything clearly, so you won't deal with surprises like this.
