Lung disease can simply take your breath away. At Berger Health System, we're committed to helping our patients breathe easier, live longer and enjoy a better quality of life. That's why we offer a Lung Care Center. Here, we provide effective care for people with pulmonary diseases.
In our Lung Care Center, our specialists can offer you a coordinated, comprehensive care program that includes lung disease diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and education—in one convenient location.
Lung diseases we treat
We treat a variety of conditions in the center, including:
- Acute bronchitis.
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
- Lung and esophageal cancer.
- Pulmonary fibrosis.
- Pulmonary hypertension.
- Sleep apnea.
Some people come to us because they've been diagnosed with lung disease and they need treatment. But we also help people with pulmonary disease symptoms who haven't yet been given a diagnosis. We have the latest technology to diagnose lung diseases in the earliest stages.
When you have a diagnosis, our team develops an individualized care plan.
Assessing your pulmonary function
As part of the lung disease diagnostic process, we may send you to our Pulmonary Function Lab. It is located in the Lung Care Center, and it offers timely, convenient pulmonary function tests. These medical tests can be used to determine how well you move air in and out of your lungs. They can also be used to assess how well oxygen moves from your lungs into the rest of your body.
In addition to using these tests to diagnose disease, we might use these tests to assess how well your medications are working in helping you to control lung disease symptoms.
This lab can also perform other lung-related outpatient procedures.
Pulmonary rehabilitation services
When you're living with a lung disease, there's a lot you can do at home to breathe easier and feel better. Our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is designed to help you learn how to make those vital changes.
During this eight-week program, you will receive education, training and a personalized exercise routine. We'll also expose you to a variety of lifestyle-altering techniques. Our goal is to help:
- Increase your strength and endurance.
- Increase your ability to manage shortness of breath.
- Increase your knowledge of disease processes and medication use.
- Increase your knowledge of oxygen devices.
- Reduce respiratory symptoms and complications.
- Reduce the number of times you're admitted to the hospital.
Pulmonary rehabilitation services are available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You'll need a referral from your provider in order to enroll. Medicare, Medicaid and other insurance plans pay for a portion of the fees.
We have an ongoing maintenance program available, if you'd like to stay connected after the eight-week program is complete. This program requires you to take part in a regular exercise regimen at Berger Hospital. There is a self-pay, monthly fee for the program.
Preventing lung disease
The development of lung diseases such as lung cancer are closely related to smoking. Other lung diseases, including asthma, can be exacerbated by an ongoing smoking habit. The sooner you quit smoking, the healthier your lungs will be.
We offer an inpatient smoking cessation program that offers tips and suggestions you can use in order to quit smoking. Our program is customized, based on your needs and preferences. When you've completed your program, we'll perform follow-up calls to offer continuing support.
Patients can be referred to the Lung Care Center at Berger Hospital by their primary care provider, or they may contact the office directly. Payments from most insurance plans and Medicare are accepted.
