(CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio) – Stephen Powell, education specialist, was recently honored for his commitment to patient care, as one of 76 nominees for the Ohio Hospital Association’s Albert E. Dyckes Health Care Worker of the Year Award.
This award is given annually to recognize employees of Ohio hospitals and health care systems who are outstanding health care workers as demonstrated by leadership, reflecting the values and ideals of Ohio’s health care facilities, going above and beyond the call of duty, giving back to the community and overcoming odds to succeed.
Every Ohio hospital was invited to nominate one candidate. The finalists and all nominees were recognized on Tuesday, June 14 at the OHA Annual Recognition Dinner at the Hilton at Easton.
Powell joined Berger Health System in 2005 as a surgical scrub tech and currently serves as the education specialist in the education department. He is responsible for maintaining Berger’s internal competencies and safety education programs that all employees are required to complete on a yearly basis. Through his position, Powell has been certified as a CPR and PALS instructor through the American Heart Association. He is on the CPR training center faculty for Berger, but extends his services by serving as a regional training center faculty member. Voluntarily, he visits other healthcare facilities that offer AHA CPR and PALS courses to assist them in their efforts.
Powell is also a strong advocate and key volunteer for the Special Olympics. He has been involved with the event for 10 years and has coordinated the event medical staff for the past six years. He pulls together a team of over 100 volunteers that includes physicians, paramedics, nurses, basic first-aid providers and EMTs to cover the needs of over 3,000 Olympians and their families.
Powell maintains rank as 1st sergeant in the United States Air Force. He has fulfilled several missions including the first Desert Storm and Operation Restore Hope in Somalia. He is focused on furthering his education in healthcare and sustaining the skills he has developed throughout his extensive experience.
