Circleville, OH – April 21, 2008 – Hospitals across the country are honoring laboratory professionals during National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, April 20-26. While this is their special week of recognition, lab professionals are appreciated every day by patients, families and hospital colleagues at Berger

Nurses, physicians and other medical professionals rely on laboratory professionals to perform tests on blood and other body fluids, interpret results, and provide answers for physicians to help diagnose and treat patients’ illnesses. Berger’s laboratory staff collects and performs over 600,000 laboratory tests annually.

For patients, the first step in having a blood test done typically involves Berger’s phlebotomists. They play an important “upfront” role in greeting the patient and using their skills and knowledge to be sure blood specimens are drawn accurately, while minimizing discomfort for the patient.

Berger’s medical technologists and medical laboratory technicians must know how to use biomedical equipment to conduct complicated analyses to detect the presence of cancer, identify infectious viruses and bacteria, and measure blood parameters such as glucose, cholesterol and therapeutic drugs. They must have the education, along with quantitative and computer skills, to produce accurate results

Laboratory professionals work in many different settings such as physician offices, private clinical laboratories, university or research laboratories, and hospitals. In addition, the professionals from Berger can be seen throughout the community offering health fairs, where they share health information and conduct health screenings.

Laboratory professionals at Berger always go the extra mile to help their patients feel more comfortable and have peace of mind. Berger’s team knows that their job is not only to accurately obtain and test specimens, but also to help every patient rest assured that they are in good hands and getting the best care possible.

Berger now has three convenient locations where community members can get their lab work done. First is the hospital, which is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. Second is the Ambulatory Care Center located at 1434 Circleville Plaza Drive near Walmart, which is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. And, the Berger Medical Center in northern Pickaway County, located off of Rte. 104 near the Southern Point housing development, which is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you have questions about Berger’s laboratory services, please call 420-8246.
