The "Living With Diabetes" education program at Berger Health System was recently awarded continued recognition from the American
Diabetes Association (ADA). The recognition is achieved by meeting national care and education standards and providing
state-of-the-art information about diabetes management for patients.
"Although diabetes has been affecting people for many years, the general public is becoming more aware of the long term
complications associated with this disease," said Shirley Vickers, RN, Coordinator of Wound Care and Disease Management at Berger.
"When people get diagnosed with diabetes they are overwhelmed and don't know where to start with managing their disease. We are here
to help them gain control."

program with a patient.
Berger's diabetes education program offers personalized programs on an outpatient basis to meet patient needs. There are both group
and individual classes. The education team includes registered nurses, registered dietitians, certified diabetes educators,
licensed counselors and pharmacists.
"We strive to teach patients the importance of personally managing their disease," said Carol Douglas, RD, CDE. "We don't want
patients to feel like diabetes controls their life, so we work with them to help incorporate it into their lifestyle."
Self-management education is an essential component of diabetes treatment. Participants in Berger's program are taught self-care
skills that promote better management of their diabetes regimen. The program covers topics such as the disease process; nutrition
management; physical activity; medications; monitoring; preventing, detecting, and treating acute and chronic complications; goal
setting and problem solving; psychological adjustment; and preconception care, management during pregnancy, and gestational
management.
