David Liggett & Mark Dawson

David Liggett
A native of Circleville, Ohio, Dave Liggett has been passionate about photography for 9 years. Dave loves to combine photography with travel and he photographs landscapes, animals, old buildings, and anything else that strays in front of his lenses. A message from David:
"I am able to emote through the looking glass of a camera in ways that can not be expressed with words. A flood of emotions can be captured in a moment and released in the resulting image.

My favorite camera is a 4x5 which is the smallest of the large format cameras--there are also 5x7, 8x10, and even larger cameras. (A 35mm camera is an example of a small format camera; there are medium format cameras as well.) Shooting with a large format camera is a deliberate process--instead of a roll of film, I shoot one 4"x5" sheet of film at a time. Even though my 4x5 looks complicated, it is actually a very simple camera--it does not have a computer chip, a motor, or even a battery!

I still create my images on film because I enjoy the craftsmanship of traditional photography. With film, I can produce a tonal range in an image that can not yet be duplicated with digital photography. I prefer the hands-on process of developing black & white film and printing the image in the darkroom over the relative ease of digital photography. The end result--the print--speaks for itself."

Mark Dawson
We are excited about Mark Dawson's return to the ArtsaRound Gallery at Berger. Mark currently resides in Amsterdam, but is a native of Circleville, Ohio. In Amsterdam, Mark earns his living through photography and various business and IT consulting projects. He travels extensively whenever he can get away from his desk job and his love for traveling is evident in his photography.

Mark has been interested in photography as long as he can remember. While a student at Circleville High School, he enjoyed learning the techniques behind photography from Lynn Kraus, but was frustrated by the overwhelming complexity and the difficulty in practicing with film. Mark feels that digital has been an incredible boom, making the learning and experimenting infinitely easier, immediate, and affordable. He is more at home behind a computer with Photoshop than in a darkroom with his Granddad's old out-of-alignment enlarger, trying to get rid of a pesky power line. He says he does miss the smell of stopbath in the morning.

The art gallery at Berger Hospital is the result of a partnership between ArtsaRound and Berger Health System. ArtsaRound is a community based organization dedicated to supporting art and artists in Pickaway County and the regional area. Berger Health System is a community based health care system dedicated to providing quality care so that people do not need to travel outside of their own backyard to have their health care needs met.

The mission of the ArtsaRound Gallery at Berger is to foster the relationship between art and healing by providing a venue for artists, primarily from, but not limited to, Pickaway County and the regional area, to offer their work for the aesthetic pleasure of patients, visitors, and staff. The initiatives of this unique program also contribute to the success of Berger Hospital's mission "to be the best community hospital in the State of Ohio."
