Gary Gillen, MD, was recently recognized for his dedication to local athletes when he received an Outstanding Team Physician Award from the Ohio State Medical Association Joint Advisory Committee on Sports Medicine. The award recognizes Dr. Gillen’s 30 years of volunteer service as a team physician at Logan Elm and Teays Valley high schools.
Only 182 Outstanding Team Physician Awards have been presented since established in 1975. The criteria for the award includes having served as a team physician for Ohio schools for at least 20 years, endorsement by the physician’s county medical society, and endorsement by the local school officials, coaches, civic officials and community members.
Dr. Gillen graduated with a bachelor of science in microbiology from The Ohio State University. He also earned his medical degree from OSU. He was part of Circleville Medical Associates from 1976-1998 and Executive Director of Pickaway Health Services from 1998-1999. He has been in solo medical practice in Circleville since1999. Dr. Gillen has also worked for Berger Hospital since 1992, where he is currently the Vice President of Medical Affairs.
Dr. Gillen has been a member of the Ohio State Medical Association and the Pickaway County Medical Society since 1976. He was the President of the Pickaway County Medical Society in 1983. Dr. Gillen has been an Ohio State University Clinical Assistant Professor for the Department of Family Medicine since 1976. He has also served on the Family Practice Review Committee of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians.
Gillen has also been active in the community through his work on the Haven House Women’s Shelter Board, the Ohio Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Child Abuse, the Scioto Paint Valley Mental Health Center Board, and as chairman for the Pickaway County Red Cross.
With such a lengthy and impressive record of service, Dr. Gillen has still found time to volunteer many, many hours as a team physician. He commented, "among all of my accomplishments, I cherish and thoroughly enjoy my work with young athletes, and I would recommend it to any interested physician."
