Berger Celebrates National Athletic Training Month

Circleville, OH -- March 8, 2004 Berger Health System's Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) are celebrating their profession this month, during National Athletic Training Month. The purpose is to generate awareness of ATCs' important role in sports settings, corporations, schools, the military, hospitals and other health care facilities, and also to educate the public on important health care issues. During this year's National Athletic Training Month, ATCs are focusing on the topic of "Injury Treatment: Early Care Speeds Recovery."

Certified athletic trainers (ATCs) are unique health care providers who specialize in the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses that occur to athletes and the physically active. ATCs strive to help athletes avoid unnecessary medical treatment and disruption of normal daily life.

Berger Health System's athletic trainers assist with the prevention and treatment of local athlete injuries by providing athletic trainers to three school districts. Since the program began in 1994, the athletic trainers have provided a valuable link between the schools, doctors and Berger Health System. Currently, Jamie Baker, MS, ATC/L, CSCS, is the trainer at Logan Elm; Trina Ream, ATC/L, is the trainer at Teays Valley; and Rob Snow, MS, ATC/L, is the trainer at Circleville.

The athletic training program has grown to include many services beyond the coverage of school sporting events. Each summer the athletic trainers coordinate the schools' summer sports physicals and put on a Speed and Power Camp for the athletes. They also conduct coaches' first-aid seminars. In addition, Berger recently became certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) to provide professional development courses for athletic trainers.

National Athletic Training Month is sponsored by NATA, a not-for-profit organization that represents 30,000 members in the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries to athletes and others who are engaged in everyday physical activities. Recognized as allied health care professionals by the American Medical Association, ATCs help lessen the burden on the public and private health care systems.
