Berger Uses Six Sigma to Save Over $1.8 Million

Circleville, OH -- July 5, 2004 "Berger Health System's mission is to serve as the health care leader for residents of Pickaway County. In this role, we are committed to providing the highest quality health services, while exercising prudent financial responsibility," said Sister Monica Justinger, Executive Director of Six Sigma.

Since implementing its Six Sigma initative in June 2002, Berger Health System has seen a net savings of $1,840,146.

The Six Sigma approach, which is a highly disciplined process centered on problem solving, is one of the fastest growing business management systems used today. The concept focuses on obtaining quantitative data, analyzing the data, and improving the process to improve efficiencies and customer satisfaction.

"Improving customer satisfaction within the System and our community is at the heart of our Six Sigma focus," said Justinger. "By seeking input from our customers, which include patients, employees, physicians, and the community, customer expectations can be exceeded and financial savings realized."

Six Sigma team members have successfully completed numerous projects that have favorable impacted health system operations. Clinical areas such as surgery, radiology, nursing units, laboratory, and physician practices as well as non-clinical areas including materials management, housekeeping and patient financial services have been or are currently involved in projects.
