Press Releases
Circleville, OH -- January 6, 2004
It is estimated that nearly five million Americans suffer from chronic, non-healing wounds, with the majority being a result of
complications from diabetes, immobility and circulatory diseases.
Now residents of Pickaway County and surrounding counties have a new opportunity for wound care treatment locally. Berger Health
System recently opened a Wound Care Clinic to offer specialized services to individuals with chronic wounds.
Specially trained healthcare personnel staff the Wound Care Clinic at Berger including three physicians. Dr. Brock Liden,
podiatrist, and Dr. Mark Choueiri, general surgeon, are the co-medical directors of the clinic. Dr. David Lawrence is the
clinic's vascular surgeon.
The interdisciplinary team also includes a registered nurse, dietitian, certified diabetes educator, clinical pharmacist, and
patient care technician.
They work to determine the causes of patients' wounds, educate patients, and develop an optimal wound-healing environment.
Individual patient care plans are developed to assist in the healing of chronic wounds and the prevention of potential
amputations.
Dr. Choueiri stated "depending on the location of the wound, the disease process involved, and the urgency of the situation,
Dr. Liden, Dr. Lawrence or myself will evaluate the patient and may have them return to the clinic for follow-up care by a
physician or nurse, or consultation with another healthcare professional."
Previously, patients had to travel to Columbus to receive this level of specialty wound care, which often created a
transportation challenge for elderly and chronically ill patients. Medicare and Medicaid will pay for ambulance transport to
Berger's Wound Care Clinic if it is medically necessary for the patient to be transported by ambulance gurney. PICCA
can also provide free transportation to individuals coming to the clinic.
The clinic is located in the Fast Track at Berger Hospital, where patients can have necessary tests and consultations done all
in one location.
"We are very excited to offer a comprehensive wound clinic where patients can receive all the care they need in one place that
is close to home," stated Dr. Liden.
Physicians can make a referral, or patients with a wound can call to schedule an appointment. Please contact Berger's Wound Care
Clinic at (740) 420-8395 for more information.
