Upper G.I. Series (UGI)

What is a UGI?

An Upper G.I. Series, or UGI is an x-ray exam of your upper digestive tract (the lining of your esophagus, stomach, and the first few inches of your intestines). It is often done to check for ulcers or swallowing problems.

How do I get ready for my test?

Do not eat, drink or smoke after midnight before your test. Also, do not take any medications after midnight. If you are diabetic, please talk to your doctor. You will be asked to remove all jewelry and may be asked to wear a gown. Please arrive at the hospital 20 minutes before your appointment and be sure to have a photo ID and your insurance information with you. If your physician gave you a written order please bring that with you as well.

During the test

The Technologist will first ask you a series of questions. If you are or think that you might be pregnant, tell the Technologist before the test is started. Several x-rays called "scout" or "preliminary" films will be taken. They are an overview of your abdomen to give the radiologist a starting point. You will be asked to stand up and drink barium, a chalky-tasting liquid that improves the x-ray images. You may also be asked to swallow "fizzies", a substance that makes air build up in your stomach. You may feel the need to belch, but please do not because the gas in the stomach enhances the detail in the images. You will then be asked to lie down flat on the x-ray table and more pictures will be taken. As the test continues the Technologist may ask you to drink more barium.

After the test

Ater your testing you may eat your normal meals. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids the rest of the day. You may notice that your stool appears white or lighter than normal for the next 48-72 hours. Sometimes the barium can cause temporary constipation, which is usually treated by an over-the-counter laxative. Your test results will be reviewed by the radiologist and forwarded to your physician.
