Pelvic Ultrasound
A Pelvic Ultrasound is an imaging test that uses sound waves to form detailed pictures of your organs. It can help
assess pain or other symptoms within your pelvis. In pregnant women it is used to check the health of the fetus (unborn baby).
30 minutes before your test you will need to drink two (2), 16 ounce glasses of water. It is important that your
bladder is full for the exam. Do not go to the bathroom before the test is performed. Please arrive at the hospital 20 minutes before
your appointment and be sure to have a photo ID and your insurance information with you. If your physician gave you a written order please bring that with you as well.
You may be asked to change into a hospital gown for the exam. You will lie on your back with your abdomen exposed.
A non-greasy gel will be applied to the skin and the sonographer will move a hand-held transducer (probe) across your abdomen and pelvic
area. Sound waves will produce images of your abdominal and pelvic organs. The entire exam will take approximately 30-45 minutes.
Your test results will be reveiwed by the radiologist and forwarded to your physician within a few days. Your doctor
will discuss the test results with you.
