Mammography
A Mammogram is a low-dose x-ray exam of breast tissue. It is used as a screening tool to detect problems with your
breasts such as cysts or cancer. Mammography is an important tool in early detection of breast cancer because it can show
changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them.
If possible, schedule your exam 10 days after the start of your period when your breasts are less tender. The day of
your test do not use deodorant, powder, lotion or perfume. If you avoid caffeine for 3 days prior to your test it can help
to make your test less uncomfortable. Arrive for your test 20 minutes prior to your appointment. Be sure to have a photo ID and
your insurance information with you. If your physician gave you a written order please bring that with you as well.
You will need to undress from the waist up and will be given a gown that opens in the front. A technologist will
position your breast on a special platform and compress it with a paddle. This helps to get the most complete x-ray image of
the breast tissue. This process will be done to both breasts. If you are or think that you might be pregnant, tell the
Technologist before the exam is started. The exam will take approximately half an hour to complete.
Your test results will be reviewed by a radiologist and forwarded to your physician. You will also be notified
of your results by our facility. It may be necessary to have an additional exam done if recommended by the radiologist.
If so, you will be contacted to schedule the exam. Mammograms should be done as often as your healthcare provider recommends.
Also, be sure to do regular self-breast exams.
