Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a test that lets your doctor see clear, detailed pictures of internal organs and
tissues in your body. MRI combines the use of strong magnets and radio waves to form an MRI image.
There may be special patient preparation required prior to the MRI.
Please contact the MRI department at 420-8122 for preparation instructions. Women may be asked to remove their make-up, which
may contain some metal. Please arrive 20 minutes before your appointment and be sure to have a photo ID and insurance
information with you. If your physician gave you a written order please bring that with you as well.
You will be asked to change into a gown and remove all jewelry and metal objects. If needed, you may be injected with
contrast through an IV. Contrast is a special dye that improves the MRI image. You will lie down on the table and the
technologist will slowly move the table into the system. The technologist may place an MRI coil around the part of the body
to be scanned. Like an antenna, the closer the coil is to the area of interest on your body, the better it receives your
signal for a better image. During the scan you will hear a tapping sound from inside the scanner that will vary in rhythm.
You should lie as still as possible when you hear the tapping sound in order to get the best images. MRI scans do not use any
X-rays or other types of potentially harmful radiation. Some medical devices, such as implants or pacemakers may prevent you
from having an MRI, please contact the MRI department for more information.
After the test you can resume your normal activities. If you were given contrast, it will pass naturally through your
body within a day. Your test results will be reviewed by the radiologist and forwarded to your physician.
If you have any other questions or concerns you may call the Berger Health System Radiology department at
(740) 420-8248. You will be put in touch with a technologist who can answer your questions.
