Hepatobiliary Scan
A Hepatobiliary Scan is a Nuclear Medicine test that creates pictures of your liver and gallbladder. This test uses a
small amount of radioactive material, a special camera and a computer.
Do not eat or drink anything for 4 hours before your test. Medications may be taken with a small amount of water.
Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and avoid snaps and zippers. Please arrive at the hospital 20 minutes before your appointment
and be sure to have a photo ID and your insurance information with you. If your physician gave you a written order please bring that with you as well.
You will have an IV started, and a small amount of radioactive material will be injected into your arm. The Technologist
will help you onto the narrow table and position you for the scan. To get the best images, relax and remain as still as you can while
the camera takes the pictures. After about one hour you may be given another medication through the IV that will make your gallbladder
tighten. The scan will take about 1.5 hours but can vary depending on the patient. If you are or think that you might be pregnant,
tell the Technologist before the scan is started.
You may resume your normal activities and diet. After your scan, the results will be reviewed by the radiologist
and forwarded to your physician.
If you have any other questions or concerns you may call the Berger Health System Radiology department at
(740) 420-8248. You will be put in touch with a Nuclear Medicine Technologist who can answer your questions.
