Bone Densitometry (DEXA scan)
DEXA, bone densitometry, is a quick, painless procedure for measuring the density of bones or extent of bone
loss. It is used to diagnose osteoporosis as well as assess your risk for developing fractures.
Do not take any calcium supplements, multivitamins or osteoporosis medication for at least 24 hours before your
scan. Wear loose, comfortable clothes and try to avoid zippers, belts, or buttons made of metal. Arrive at Berger's
Ambulatory Care Center 20 minutes prior to your appointment. Be sure to have a photo ID and your insurance
information with you. If your physician gave you a written order please bring that with you as well.
The DEXA scan takes about 10-30 minutes, depending on the parts of the body being examined. You may be asked to
undress and put on a gown. The Technologist will ask you to lie on a table and will place you in position. You
may be asked to hold an awkward position for a short time while the arm of the machine passes over your body
taking measurements. It is important to stay as still as possible during the procedure to ensure the best image.
There is no special care needed after your scan. A radiologist will review your results and forward them to your
physician.
If you have any other questions or concerns you may call Berger Health System Radiology department at
(740) 420-8248 or Berger's Ambulatory Care Center at (740) 420-7925. You will be put in touch with a Technologist
who can answer your questions.
